A Closer Look at SSRIs

When you talk about Anxiety Attacks, you will often hear or read about the possible anxiety attacks medication that people can take. But before you take these anxiety attacks medication, have you familiarized yourself with the possible side effects that come along with the momentary relief? If not, then let’s just have a short introduction to one of the possible anxiety attacks medication around and the possible side effects it has when taken.

SSRI (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) – these are a class of compounds typically used as antidepressants in the treatment of depression, anxiety disorders, and some personality disorders. They are also typically effective and used in treating some cases of insomnia. And they are the most widely prescribed antidepressants in many countries

They are believed to increase the extracellular level of the neurotransmitter serotonin by inhibiting its reuptake into the presynaptic cell, increasing the level of serotonin in the synaptic cleft available to bind to the postsynaptic receptor. They have varying degrees of selectivity for the other monoamine transporters, with pure SSRIs having only weak affinity for the noradrenaline and dopamine transporter.

Remember that general side-effects of anxiety attacks medication are common during the first weeks while the body adjusts to the drug.

Some of the side effects of anxiety attacks medication have are the following:

Anhedonia – the inability to experience pleasure from activities formerly found enjoyable, e.g. hobbies, exercise, social interaction
Apathy – the suppression of emotions
Headache
Vomiting
Nausea
Bruxism – grinding of the teeth and typically includes the clenching of the jaw
Tinnitus – usually described as a ringing noise, but can also take the form of a high pitched whining, electric, buzzing, hissing, screaming, humming, tinging or whistling sound, or as ticking, clicking, roaring, tunes, songs, beeping, or even a pure steady tone
Extremely vivid or strange dreams
Dizziness
Fatigue
Mydriasis – dilation of the pupil
Urinary retention
Changes in appetite
Changes in sleep
Changes in sexual behaviour
Weight loss/gain
Increased risk of bone fractures and injuries
Increased feelings of depression and anxiety tremors
Orthostatic Hypotension – a form of hypotension in which a person’s blood pressure suddenly falls when the person stands up
Increased or reduced sweating
Akathisia – inability to sit still or remain motionless
Renal impairment
Suicidal thoughts photosensitivity
Paresthesia – a sensation of tingling, pricking, or numbness of a person’s skin with no apparent long-term physical effect.
Sexual dysfunctions (like anorgasmia, erectile dysfunction, and diminished libido)
Cardiovascular problems like sinus tachycardia, myocardial infarction, junctional rhythms and trigeminy. (rarely appears but can appear if the patient already has a history of pre-existing cardiovascular disease)
