Navy Black
Were there any black Navy pilots during the 1960′s ?
I know there were a few Air Force ones and some in the Army, but the Navy always seemed to prefer white officers. Just wondered.
I don’t think the Tuskagee airmen were Navy, but part of the Army Air Corps. My dad rescued one that was shot down in either France or Germany when he was acting as a scout.
Good question, well defined. Yes, the Navy was more resistant to change (in everything as a habit), but especially in this, as their officer corp has had a high proportion of Southerners for a hundred years.
But I’m afraid I don’t know if they had NO black pilots in the 60′s. Also, Marine pilots are Navy pilots.
If you include helicopter pilots, who were often warrant officers (non-commissioned), then the Marines in the Vietnam era would have had black helicopter pilots. I can’t imagine them not.
